Differences Among Chestnut Tree Varieties

Chestnut tree varieties include several species of deciduous trees that are native to the northern hemisphere’s temperate regions. Species include the Chinkapin, Japanese, Chinese, European, and American chestnuts in addition to hybrid varieties. All chestnut trees form a crown with their small branches and produce edible nuts. However, there are notable differences between the different species. For example, the shape, color, and texture of each species leaves differ, as do the size and quantity of nuts produced.

Chestnut tree species also grow to different heights. Whereas European Chestnuts can reach a height of 35 meters, American Chestnuts reach a maximum height of 30 meters tall. Other smaller species include the Chinese Chestnuts which grow to 20 meters and the Japanese Chestnut which grows to 15 meters tall. Moreover, blight resistance also varies among species, and some have a sweet taste when eaten while others lack the sweetness and taste starchy.
